GOLDEN DELICIOUS is a cocktail that I developed during my time at the Red Fez in 2007.  The primary ingredient is Aperol; an Italian aperitif whose primary flavorings are bitter orange and rhubarb.  Aperol has a cleansing bittersweet taste not unlike Campari, which is produced by the same company.  However, Aperol‘s 11.5% alcohol by volume is less than half of Campari’s 28% making Aperol a light mixer ideally suited to flavored vodka as in the Golden Delicious.

2 Parts Aperol

1 Part Lemon Vodka

1.5 oz. Simple Syrup

Juice of expressed 1/4 lemon

Rim martini glass with lemon and roll through sugar.  Perch lemon slice on the rim of the martini glass.

Combine the above in a cocktail shaker with 1 9 oz. glass ice.  Affix 16 oz. mixing glass and shake vigorously until the outside of the cocktail shaker is totally frosted.  Shake and break into martini glass.

Yum!  The sweetness hits first with the sugar and the Aperol awakening the tongue while the lemon vodka and lemon juice cleanse the palate in short order.

Sweetness without stickiness.

Light but not “lite”.

Yes, it does taste like a tangy Golden Delicious Apple just at the point of ripeness.
